Context, Contrast, Continuity – Heritage Conservation and Urban Development
The international online debate event series “Context, Contrast, Continuity – Heritage Conservation and Urban Development” focuses on how the needs of conservation as well as development requirements can be managed in the urban context. How can historically developed urban fabrics/structures or singular buildings withstand the pressure for change from e.g. the real estate industry or housing demands? What can be done by the City’s administration, politicians and society to protect its cultural heritage? How can existing buildings be integrated into the ongoing development and possibly be adapted to the new standards of living of our era?  Researchers and professionals from Israel as well as Germany will address and discuss these and similar questions. The international online debate event series “Context, Contrast, Continuity – Heritage Conservation and Urban Development” is a cooperation of the Liebling Haus- White City Center (Tel Aviv Yafo), the Deutsches Architekturmuseum and the ernst-may-gesellschaft (Frankfurt am Main) and ICOMOS Deutschland. It forms part of the 40th anniversary of the City Partnership Frankfurt Tel Aviv.

Built Heritage in Modern Metropolises. Urban Development and Cultural Heritage under Pressure
The first online debate of the international event series “Context, Contrast, Continuity – Heritage Conservation and Urban Development”  focuses on the buildings and settlements of Neues Frankfurt and the listed UNESCO heritage zone also known as the White City of Tel Aviv. How can the existing cultural heritage be preserved in these two prosperous cities? How can it be adapted to the current requirements and living standards (including building additions on top of heritage listed buildings in the case of the White City)? What are the similarities and differences in dealing with the cultural heritage in Germany compared to in Israel? How do the developers, politicians and heritage conservators and not least the inhabitants liaise with each other? Heinz Wionski, Head of Conservation of the State of Hesse? (ret.), and Jeremie Hoffmann (Head of Conservation Department Tel Aviv Yafo Municipality) will address these topics. Katharina Böttger, freelance curator and urban researcher, will reflect on the current situation within the Neues Frankfurt settlements.

The event will be held in English.
