Outstanding 20th Century Heritage World Heritage Sites and World Heritage Initiatives in Germany and Israel

The fourth online discussion of the „Context, Contrast, Continuity – Heritage Conservation and Urban Development“ series will focus on world heritage sites of the 20th Century in Germany and Israel. Different outstanding projects from both countries will be presented – exceptional buildings as well as urban developments, already listed as well as potential candidates for listing as World Heritage Sites. The online event will also discuss and reflect on positive (and maybe also negative?) impacts and long-term influences that inclusion in the UNESCO world heritage list have for urban development and Baukultur.

For ICOMOS Regina Stephan, art and architecture historian, opens with presenting a broad outline of potential world heritage sites of Modern Architecture in Germany. Birgit Kann from the German Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) reflects on the opportunities and challenges of heritage conservation for urban development. From Israel, the architect, town planner and former director of the Israel Antiquities Authority’s conservation department, Giora Solar, presents the case for the harbor city of Haifa as a potential world heritage candidate. Guy Kav Venaki, urban planner, advisor to the Israeli Planning Administration, and former chair of the Israel World Heritage Committee, will contextualize the candidacy of Haifa with other (potential) UNESCO world heritage sites in Israel. Eran Mordohovich, architect and Head of the board of ICOMOS Israel will then open the discussion.

Andrea Jürges, Deputy Director of the Deutsches Architekturmuseum, will be the moderator. The online discussion will be conducted in English.
