New Czech Architecture + Villa Tugendhat restoration

Presented on the occasion of the Frankfurt Book Fair 2026, with the Czech Republic as the Guest of Honour, the contemporary Czech architecture exhibition at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum showcases innovative projects by young architects from the so-called millennial generation. It offers a unique opportunity to introduce the relatively unknown young Czech architectural scene to the German public.
It builds upon the legacy of the Villa Tugendhat in Brno, 1928–1930, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich in their forties, as an iconic building of modernism. The exhibition includes 28 award-winning architectural projects, mainly located in regions outside of Prague, thereby encouraging a multi-local approach to exploring the Czech Republic. Exhibited projects include the award-winning headquarters of the Lahofer winery in Dobšice, the conversion of Gočár’s Automatic Mills in Pardubice, the Our Lady of the Sorrows Chapel in Nesvalčilka, and the new footbridge on Štvanice Island in Prague, among others. All of these projects illustrate the diverse approaches contemporary Czech architecture brings to working with the landscape, historical heritage and new technology.
The exhibition is curated by Helena Huber-Doudová from the National Gallery Prague.
