Outstanding 20th Century Heritage – How to Live in it & What are the Advantages?

Which characteristics may be shared by the housing estates of Neues Frankfurt, of Berlin and the White City Tel Aviv with the Sydney opera house – aside from being built in the 20th century?

What defines life today in all those buildings which were at the time of construction considered modern and well liked? How does one connect with others living in a heritage listed building? And how can this environment be adapted to current requirements? What are possible restrictions, challenges and opportunities? Where is it necessary to act with particular care? World heritage sites are also living organisms which develop and need possibilities for adaptation.

These topics will be the focus during our next online discussion with inhabitants, architects and heritage experts within our series “Context, Contrast, Continuity”. We have invited inhabitants and experts with strong engagements with regard to “their” heritage sites and who will present their projects and experiences: Ben Buschfeld, inhabitant of the Hufeisensiedlung in Berlin, Cornelius Boy, inhabitant of the Ernst-May-estate in Frankfurt-Praunheim, from Israel Brad Pinchuk, architect living in the White City Tel Aviv as well as Sheridan Burke from ICOMOS Australia with expertise on Sydney’s opera house and its ongoing adaptations.

The discussion event will be conducted in English.

Context, Contrast, Continuity – Heritage Conservation and Urban Development
The international online debate event series “Context, Contrast, Continuity – Heritage Conservation and Urban Development” focuses on how the needs of conservation as well as development requirements can be managed in the urban context. How can historically developed urban fabrics/structures or singular buildings withstand the pressure for change from e.g. the real estate industry or housing demands? What can be done by the City’s administration, politicians and society to protect its cultural heritage? How can existing buildings be integrated into the ongoing development and possibly be adapted to the new standards of living of our era?  Researchers and professionals from Israel as well as Germany will address and discuss these and similar questions.

The international online debate event series “Context, Contrast, Continuity – Heritage Conservation and Urban Development” is a cooperation of the Liebling Haus- White City Center (Tel Aviv Yafo), the Deutsches Architekturmuseum and the ernst-may-gesellschaft (Frankfurt am Main), as well as of ICOMOS and Do.Co.Mo.Mo of Germany and Israel. It forms part of the 40th anniversary of the City Partnership Frankfurt Tel Aviv-Yafo and has been made possible by the federal sponsoring program “Nationale Projekte des Städtebaus – Aufwertung der Siedlungen des Neuen Frankfurt”
