International Highrise Award 2020: 31 Highrise  Projects Nominated Worldwide

Frankfurt/Main, August 20, 2020

The buildings nominated for the International Highrise Award (IHP) 2020 have now been selected: Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) has chosen them from over 1,000 new high-rise buildings construed over the past two years worldwide. The five shortlisted finalists from this group will be announced in September. The winner of the International Highrise Award will be presented on October 29, 2020 in the Paulskirche in Frankfurt/Main.

This year, 31 projects from 14 different countries have been nominated for the International Highrise Award. As in previous years, China is the country with the most high-rise projects. About every third sky-rise with a height of at least 100 meters is being built there. The enormous construction activity is also evidence by this year’s list of nominees, which includes ten projects in China.

That said, high-rises are also increasingly being built in Europe and Africa. The Casablanca Finance City Tower in Morocco is the first high-rise building on the African continent to be nominated for the award.

Distribution of the nominees:
China: 10 (32.26%)
Asia (excluding China): 4 (12.9%)
Europe: 6 (19.35%)
USA: 6 (19.35%)
Central and South America (Mexico and Colombia): 3 (9.68%)
Kuwait: 1 (3.23%)
Africa (Morocco): 1 (3.23%)

The International Highrise Award has been presented every two years since 2004. The IHA was jointly initiated in 2003 by the City of Frankfurt, Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) and DekaBank Deutsche Girozentrale. It is financed by DAM and DekaBank. It will be awarded for the ninth time in 2020.

The criteria for the award are that the building combines sustainability, external form and internal spatial qualities, economic efficiency and social aspects into an exemplary design. The IHP is aimed at architects and developers whose buildings are at least 100 metres high and were completed in the past two years.
