Kritisch Erben für eine solidarischere Stadt
Über Bodenpolitik, Leerstand und Wohnraum als Gemeingut 

Sozialer Wohnbau, eine Stadt, die sich als „soziale Stadt“ feiern lässt, Umverteilung durch eine Hauszinssteuer und Bodenbereitstellung durch Enteignungsprogramme – welche utopischen Ideen der „sozialen Wirtschaftlichkeit“ des Neuen Frankfurt aus den 1920er-Jahren sind heute immer noch wirksam, welche sind in Vergessenheit geraten? Was lässt sich aus diesen Ideen für den heutigen Kontext lernen?

Die neue soziale Stadt besteht schon: wenn wir den Leerstand unserer Städte nutzen könnten – so auch in Frankfurt, wo zwei Millionen Quadratmeter leer stehen.

Ausgehend von dem Ausstellungsbeitrag „Found Futures. Das neue Neue Frankfurt“ meines Fachgebiets an der Uni Kassel widmen wir uns Spaziergängen, Ausstellungsbesichtigungen und Gesprächen mit Aktivist:innen sowie der gemeinsamen Beschäftigung mit Bildern, Konzepten und Errungenschaften vergangener urbaner Utopien, um eine kollektivere und solidarischere Zukunft zu konzipieren.

About land policy, vacancies and housing as a common good

Social housing, a city that can be celebrated as a ‘social city’, redistribution through a house rent tax and land provision through expropriation programmes – which utopian ideas of the ‘social economy’ of New Frankfurt from the 1920s are still effective today, and which have been forgotten? What can be learnt from these ideas for today’s context?

The new social city already exists: if we could make use of the vacant space in our cities – including in Frankfurt, where two million square metres stand empty.

Based on the exhibition contribution „Found Futures. Das neue Neue Frankfurt“ (Found Futures: The New New Frankfurt) by my department at the University of Kassel, we will dedicate ourselves to walks, exhibition visits and conversations with activists as well as a joint examination of images, concepts and achievements of past urban utopias in order to conceptualise a more collective and solidary future.

Commons Kitchen
commons kitchen ist ein temporäres Forum, wie eine Fernsehkochshow, in dem das Verhältnis von Stadt, Ernährung, Versorgung und städtischer Infrastruktur praxisorientiert zum Ausdruck kommt. Anders als bei der Frankfurter Küche geht es um die Vergemeinschaftung von Sorgearbeit, Großküchen, Kantinen, Volksküchen, „Containern“ – Die städtische Ernährungsinfrastruktur. Das Zubereiten mündet in unterschiedlichsten Ausdrucksformen. Es können alle denkbaren Materialien verwendet werden: Bau- und Bastelmaterial, verschiedenste Medien und Texte. Daraus hervorgehen kann eine Beschreibung, eine Performance, eine Satire, ein Verbesserungsvorschlag, oder ein Gericht für die Stadtbewohner:innen als eine Stellungnahme, die über die üblichen Formen von Kritik hinausreicht. Durch Bauprozesse, Videoaufnahmen und live Aktionen entsteht das performative Format der commons kitchen.

Commons Kitchen
commons kitchen is a temporary forum, like a TV cooking show, in which the relationship between the city, food, supply and urban infrastructure is expressed in a practice-orientated way. Unlike the Frankfurt kitchen, the focus is not on rationalizing individual work, but on communitizing care work: communal cooking, canteens, commercial kitchens, soup kitchens, dumpster diving—in short, the urban food infrastructure as a social and political structure. The preparation leads to the most diverse forms of expression. All conceivable materials can be used: Building and craft materials, various media and texts. The result can be a description, a performance, a satire, a suggestion for improvement, or a dish for the city dwellers as a statement that goes beyond the usual forms of criticism. The performative format of the commons kitchen is created through construction processes, video recordings and live actions.

Elements of Care: Practicing Urban Curating
Um die Jahrhundertwende wurde von Architekt:innen, Künstler:innen und Stadtplaner:innen eine neue Praxis der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Urbanen vorgeschlagen: Urban Curating. Das Seminar untersucht, wie sich das städtische Kuratieren von einem ‚social turn‘ zu einem ‚elemental turn‘ bewegt, die sich mit Luft, Feuer, Erde und Wasser beschäftigt. Der ‚elemental turn‘ ist eine kritische Diagnose der heutigen Lebensbedingungen. Sie unterstreicht die dringende Notwendigkeit, sich um diese Elemente als lebenswichtige und autonome Bestandteile des (städtischen) Lebens zu kümmern. Urbanes Kuratieren heute erforscht daher Praktiken der Sorge und des Reparierens. Das Seminar zielt darauf ab, gemeinsam zu verstehen, wie die vier Elemente als Elemente der Sorge verstanden werden können. Dabei werden Orte in Frankfurt identifiziert, die in Bezug auf Elemente der Sorge von Interesse sind, und versucht, Ideen und Konzepte zu entwickeln, wie Urban Curating mit diesen Orten auf sorgende und reparierende Weise arbeiten könnte.

Elements of Care: Practicing Urban Curating
At the turn of the century a new practice of engaging with the urban was proposed by architects, artists, and urban planners: urban curating. The seminar explores how urban curating is shifting from a ‚social turn‘ to an ‚elemental turn‘, engaging with air, fire, earth, and water. The elemental turn is a critical diagnosis of the contemporary condition of life. This turn highlights the urgent need to care for these elements as vital and autonomous parts of (urban) life. Urban curating today explores therefore practices of care and repair. Together, the seminar aims to understand how the four elements can be understood as elements of care. Identifying sites in Frankfurt that are of interest in relation to elements of care, the seminar aims to develop ideas and concepts of how urban curating could work with these sites in care-ful and reparative ways.

Ressourcen – Bestand als Commons
Wie können die Siedlungen des Neuen Frankfurt heute als Commons gedacht und gestaltet werden – solidarisch, zugänglich, gemeinschaftlich? Ausgehend vom gebauten Erbe des Neuen Frankfurt erproben wir neue Szenarien für urbanes Wohnen. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, wie räumliche Ressourcen – Wohnungen, Gärten, Höfe, Infrastrukturen – als gemeinsame Güter neu interpretiert und weiterentwickelt werden können.

Das Seminar verknüpft gestalterische Praxis-über das architektonische Entwerfen, mit gesellschaftspolitischen Fragen. In interdisziplinären Teams entwickeln die Teilnehmenden räumliche Szenarien und experimentelle Prototypen, die an konkreten Bestandssiedlungen des Neuen Frankfurt ansetzen. Ausgangspunkt ist die Auseinandersetzung mit dem gebauten Bestand als gemeinsame Ressource im Mittelpunkt: Ziel ist die Weiterentwicklung im Sinne einer neuen Umbaukultur: ressourcenschonend, inklusiv und gemeinschaftsorientiert.

Resources: Existing buildings as commons
How can the housing estates of the Neues Frankfurt be conceived as commons today – in solidarity, accessible, communal? Based on the architectural legacy of the Neues Frankfurt, we will test new scenarios for urban living in simulation games. At its core lies the question of how spatial resources – such as dwellings, gardens, courtyards, and infrastructures – can be reinterpreted and further developed as shared assets designed for the future.

The seminar bridges design practice – over architectural design–with political inquiry. n interdisciplinary teams, participants develop spatial scenarios and experimental prototypes based on selected housing estates of the Neues Frankfurt. The focus is on developing own spatial scenarios and planning games at the interface between architecture and social practice. What forms of coexistence will we need in the future? The point of departure is a critical engagement with the existing built stock as a shared common resource: The aim is it not only to preserve, but to further develop in the spirit of a new culture of transformation and the common good.
