  • PAUL BONATZ 1877–1956

Eds: Wolfgang Voigt und Roland May
    Language: German \ English
    Published by Wasmuth Verlag

Text-contributions by Uwe Bresan, Burcu Dogramaci, Hartmut Frank, Marc Hirschfell, Karl Kiem, Roland May, Joaquin Medina-Warmburg, Matthias Roser and Wolfgang Voigt

The richly illustrated monograph with a commented catalogue of works presents in Paul Bonatz an influential 20th century's architect and teacher, who left behind a diverse body of work ranging from Modernism to traditional that dated from the German Empire to the early Federal Republic. Bonatz also made a name for himself as a designer of technical buildings. More than almost any other architect he succeeded in striking up a productive dialog with the engineers. Bonatz was a liberal cosmopolitan, and his relationship to Nazi Germany was correspondingly reserved. Nevertheless, in the 1930s he bid for government contracts, and was awarded a number of them. Although, as a bridge designer he had an influential position on the team that built the Reich’s autobahn system, he criticized Albert Speer’s gigantism and in 1944 emigrated to Turkey, where he afterwards had acted as architect and teacher for ten years. His most important building, the Stuttgart Main Railway Station (1911-27) is currently at the center of the controversy surrounding the “Stuttgart 21” project – both wings will be sacrificed.

  • DAM ANNUAL 2003
    Architecture in Germany

Edited by Deutsches Architektur Museum, Ingeborg Flagge, Annina Goetz
    bilingual German/English

The 2003 edition of the DAM Annual focuses on recent Christian church buildings. This particular building challenge continues to fascinate architects still today. Three critics endeavour to develop the reasons behind in detailed essays.

The extensive section on individual projects starts with reviews of contemporary German church buildings by Nikolaus Bienefeld, Paul Böhm, Kister Scheithauer Gross, Königs Architekten, Staib Architekten with Günter Behnisch and Hans Waechter. Further reviews describe the current state of the art of building in Germany exemplified by projects of Allmann Sattler Wappner, Bolles+Wilson, Bottega+Ehrhardt, the Archiepiscopal Office of Construction in Freiburg, Annette Gigon/Mike Guyer, Gruentuch Ernst, Peter Kulka, Ortner&Ortner, André Poitiers, schneider+schumacher and Volker Staab. As a novelty in this year’s edition, active architects figure as the authors of these reviews.
